Archive for Baby

As a photographer AND a Mom, I must admit that I don’t appear in many family photos. Someone’s gotta take the photo, right? On our last family vacation to Europe, I posted many photos on my page for my Dad to see along our trip, but all he ended up doing was asking me if I had been ill on the trip because I wasn’t in any of them. So I asked my Dad: Who do you think took the photos? Ok, note to self, buy one of those lamo selfie sticks next time.

But then I think about when I do newborn sessions in my studio and have Moms who don’t want to be photographed because they don’t think they don’t look good. LADIES, pleeeeeeease give yourselves a break. You JUST gave birth and bringing a child into the world is a frickn’ miracle. Your child(ren) don’t care if you have dark circles or having lost the baby weight (especially after one week, c’mon get real). EXIST in photos and live your life in the moment. Join the movement: GET IN THE PHOTO! Your family will thank you for it and you’ll be glad you did too. Watch this video for a giggle and a good reminder. 🙂

What is more heart warming than a baby’s smile? It’s the picture of happiness, even though many doctors say a newborn’s smile is more likely the result of gas than an emotional reaction. Nevertheless, little Marco gave so many smiles during his newborn session here at the Sweet Pea Photography studio that it just melted my heart. Oh, and don’t get me started on his incredible hair!

A few weeks ago, Sweet Pea Photography held a special fundraising event: “Santa in the Studio”. For one day only, a small group of past clients were invited to have their children photographed with Santa, with 100% of the session fees donated to Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. Thank you to all that participated in our charity fundraiser! Together we raised over $300 for CHEO!

Meet 4 month old Samuel.  Samuel’s parents brought him to the Sweet Pea Photography studio for his first milestone session. He is one handsome little dude with a smile that would melt any heart. Gotta love the perfectly timed drop of drool on that lip!

She’s back for her third session with Sweet Pea Photography! This session captured Miss Julia’s 9 month baby milestone. This is a fantastic age to photograph — besides newborn, it is my favourite! Miss Julia was sitting up on her own and showing off her mad crawling skills. Oh, how the personalities emerge at this age. Thank you Miss Julia for brightening my day, but oh yeah, i’d like to keep those adorable dimples of yours! 😉

Babies change so much during their first year of life. Don’t let these moments pass away forever. Book your Cherished Baby Collection today! This series of three mini sessions includes captures the biggest milestones of your baby’s first year: 3-4 months (big smiles, holding head up high); 6-9 months (sitting up on their own) and 1 year of age (the BIG birthday!). Meet Miss Leyla. Her mommy was the big winner of the online charity auction held by Silent Auction for Relay for Life- Team Rescuing Lives in which Sweet Pea Photography donated a mini milestone session with a bonus 16×20″ wall print, digital file and $50 print credit also included. Miss Leyla has the most beautiful eyes and lashes that any grown woman would want. Would you believe that at a mere 4 months of age, this little princess could already sit up on her own? I was astounded! Sure she tipped over a couple of times like a webble wobble but for the most part, she held her own. Not only that, she was one of  the happiest babies I’ve seen. Full of smiles and giggles. As soon as mommy brought her into my studio, she immediately brightened my day by just looking at me with that infectious smile.   Sweet-Pea-Photography27 Sweet-Pea-Photography153 Sweet-Pea-Photography220 Sweet-Pea-Photography126 Sweet-Pea-Photography79

Today I welcomed back Baby Eleanor to the studio for the first time since her newborn session. Oh how this little doll has changed in only a few months! It was the first of 3 sessions of the Cherished Baby Collection (which captures the 3 big milestones of baby’s first year). She was so full of smiles & giggles it just made my heart melt! How lucky she is to have such wonderful parents that make her so happy and for me to have such amazing clients who are willing to drive 2 hours to have their baby’s portraits taken. Thanks M&M!! xo

Stay tuned for Baby Eleanor’s precious portraits! For more info about baby’s first year milestones and the Cherished Baby Collection, check out the website: http://www.sweetpeadesign.ca/baby-milestones/

As many clients do ask this questions I thought I would share this everyone….

“Can I Just Get the CD?”-a letter to a potential client (by Missy Mwac)

Dear potential client,

I have no crystal ball, yet, I know you will be calling me this week for information about what I do. You might have seen one of my displays or my website or, hopefully, was referred by a friend. And you will have liked what you saw-otherwise, you wouldn’t be calling me. And for that, I am truly happy.

And we will speak together on the phone: me asking questions to better understand what it is you are needing, but more importantly, what you are “wanting.” The wants are always more important than the needs when it comes to Art. And we will speak of the love you have for your family and ideas for your session and I will share your excitement, for this truly is an exciting time.

And then, dear potential client, you will ask that question that is asked every day in phone calls to photography studios everywhere: “Can I get just the CD?”

I don’t blame you for asking this. I really don’t. It’s become as common as “Would you like fries with that?”

And when I first began to hear this question, I reasoned I had to come up with a simple response. It couldn’t be wordy or lengthy-just a one or two line answer as to why I don’t do that. But I couldn’t fit my response into just a couple sentences, because to do that would be to answer simply, “no,” without helping you to understand why, and that’s not fair to you.

See, my dear potential client, anyone can “just give you a CD.”

Anyone. It takes no special skill.

And you must know that, as that was part of your inquiry. And may I be completely honest? If all you want is someone to snap off some images and hand you a CD, well, you don’t need me. Seriously. Anyone can do that for you. There are thousands of people out there willing to make a quick buck by “shooting and burning.” Or shooting and uploading to a cloud. Heck, you can do it with your own iPhone. No need to pay for that. That would be silly, right? If all you want is a hot dog, why pay good money for a steak?

My clients come to me because they want more than that.

See, I don’t believe in selling a CD filled with images that will be shared a few times and then stuck in a drawer with other CD’s. Think I’m wrong? Let me ask you-when was the last time you printed the snapshot photos you’ve taken with your camera phone? Exactly. We’re all guilty of it.

You called me, dear potential client, because, hopefully, you like what I do, and in order to get what I do, you have to let me do it. See, I don’t believe the photography experience is over until I place a print in your hand. And not just any print, but an image created with great care and attention to detail, and edited the same way. I didn’t run it through a bunch of Photoshop actions, slapped it on a CD and called it a day. Oh no-again, I believe photography isn’t about that. I went over this image inch by inch-softening skin, removing fly-away hairs, calming down white tennis shoes, brightening eyes and teeth, making sure the image is as warm and pleasing as possible. And then, I have it printed. And, once printed, if it doesn’t meet with my expectations, it is redone until it does.

Why?

Because I know how it is supposed to look and I won’t settle for anything less than perfect. That’s why clients come to me. And, because unlike the drugstore or Walmart or one of the countless online sites from which you can get a print, it’s important to me that your prints be the best they can be. This is not “just paper.” I would be doing you a great disservice to hand off digital images for you to “finish.” What artist of merit does that?

You told me at the beginning of this conversation that it had been years since your last family portrait. We talked about how quickly the children are growing and how difficult it is to get everyone together and how important this is to you.

And that, dear potential client, is exactly why we will print them-so that 20, 30, 50 years from now you, your children and grandchildren won’t be holding a CD or hard drive that refuses to open, but will, instead, hold a glorious image in their hands, thankful that you cared enough to preserve it for them in print.

Now, my dear new client, lets make something together that’s going to last…

xoxo

Meet 10 day old Cohen. He was born in late January and it was the best day of his parents’ lives. But not only did Emma & John celebrate the birth of their son, they also got engaged that same day, following the birth of their son. They are such a sweet, loving couple who will forever remember this incredibly special day!

P.S. Special thanks to Emma’s mother who purchased a Sweet Pea Photography gift certificate for their newborn session. It makes the perfect gift!

Meet Miss Eleanor, a beautiful redhead that was a mere 4 days of age when she came in for her newborn portrait session with Sweet Pea Photography. Her parents, May & Mike, drove all the way from Pembroke for her first official portraits and the results they received were worth the two hour trip to Ottawa and two hour return.

May wrote this message to me after receiving her portraits: “Hi Suzanne! The pictures are just amazing I can’t stop looking at them. Thank you so much for capturing those moments, it goes too fast. See you in a few months for the next milestones.”

I can’t wait to watch Miss Eleanor as she changes and grows during her first year of life!
